…Locked away in the treasure box, as it were. For good reason. For the best reasons now, no doubt. But that doesn't mean you don't still wish that you could hold them in your hand sometimes. Even just once more. Just to remember the magic of what once was.

Save the inevitable conjuring, save the guilt, save the shame, save the hurt, save the destruction, save the curse of pocketing what's not yours. Save whatever else would come with it. Some things are better left untouched.

It's like taking sand or shells from a secluded beach in a country where you don't belong. You’re not supposed to do that on vacation. Even if you selfishly wish to keep them for their beauty, knowing full well you’re likely to never return, it’s not the right thing to do. It’s bound to bring a blight. So just leave the forbidden souvenirs as they were, lest you invite misfortune. You don’t need to prove that you visited those shores. Don’t ask the sunbathers and the salty-haired surfers if they saw you there. Try taking pictures with your eyes instead.

Make sense of it as it is. Here, now: a few deep breaths, an awestruck glance at the gorgeous tapestry you worked so hard to create as it gloriously unfolds before you, and a reminder to yourself that saudade is always at its peak when the seasons are changing. Let it wash over you like waves. There’s always a reason…

For the person you once were. For all that remains. For the sealed treasure chest and the precious gems contained therein.
